Auditions are a cold read. That means you won't see the script until called up to read. Younger auditions can have help from a parent or one of our older auditions with the reading. We are not looking at if you are able to read, just that we can hear you and see how you portray the emotion on your face.
Here are some tips for a cold read audition:
1) The directors will give you time to read through the scene before you start. Take that time and look at what your character may be feeling or thinking.
2) Speak slowly, clearly and loudly. The directors sit at the end of the room for a reason, we want to know that you can project.
3) Keep the script at chest level, not over your face. We want to see your facial expressions.
4) Don't spend the time the others are speaking looking at the script. Listen and react to your acting partners. Keep your thumb at your place in the script so you don't lose your place.
5) Practice before hand reading scripts you are not familiar with. Do it in front of a mirror and practice putting emotion to it.
6) Ask questions if you are not sure of something. If you don't remember your character, ask. If you want to know something about the scene or character, feel free to ask. This shows the director you want to do a good job.
7) Try to relax and have fun with it. I know, I know, hard to do as you're nervous, but the more you can make yourself relax and have fun with the reading, the more character you can put into it.
